A ratio that is too long may prevent you from taking full advantage of the engine's power, and one that is too short can have the same effect. Normally, you should follow certain guidelines to choose them.
The most important thing to know is that the higher the number of teeth on the pinion, the longer the gear ratio, and the lower the number of teeth, the shorter it becomes.

In the case of the sprocket it is completely different: if it has more teeth, it results in a shorter gear ratio, whereas if it has fewer teeth, it lengthens it.
