About Derbi

The Spanish brand Derbi was founded in 1922 by Simeón Rabasa Singla, who worked as a bicycle repairman. In 1944, Simeón, along with his brother Josep, created the brand Bicicletas Rabasa. It wasn't until 1949 that the Derbi brand came to be, with the creation of their first motorcycle, the Derbi SRS. This model had 48cc and 1,5hp, and it became a success for the brand.

The name of the brand comes from the Spanish expression "DERivado de una BIcicleta" (literal translation: derived from a bicycle).

Derbi had pilots with great track records during its years in competition. Pilots such as Joan Olivé, Pol Espargaró or Ángel Nieto raced with their models, until they reached the top of the World Championship.

Amongst the Derbi models, the Derbi Senda R stands out with a 49cc displacement, that was able to achieve 8,5hp when the limitations on contamination and air polution weren't as restrictive.

In 2001, the Italian group Piaggio fully acquired the Derbi brand.
